On October 14, a local family of 4 lost their home and most of their belongings in a devastating fire. It is possible that there may have also been a loss of life if not for the very unselfish and heroic efforts of Anita Cosby.
Here is an excerpt from a letter received by Mayor Pollard a couple of days after the fire: “On Monday I was privileged to be a witness to a home town hero in our own little community. A woman risked her own life to rescue three people and their pets from a burning structure. She then took off her own shoes and gave them to one of the women that lost hers in the fire. It is not often that you see that kind of caring and compassion. I think this kind of bravery deserves recognition. As Mayor you have the power and responsibility to make it happen. The citizens of Carmi would like to see this woman honored for her commitment to her community and her fellow man.”
WSIL-TV 3 in Harrisburg featured Anita in a recent Hometown Hero segment.
Today Mayor Pollard recognized Anita, not only for this act of bravery and kindness, but for her endless efforts to help others in our community. She was astonished and overwhelmed to be presented with the key to the City of Carmi.
